Blood pressure is the force exerted against the walls of the arteries as  the heart pumps blood round the body. The importance of blood pressure lies in the fact that it pushes oxygen and nutrients around the circulatory system to nourish tissues and organs, delivers white blood cells and antibodies for defence, and hormones for normal body functioning. In addition, the fresh blood that gets delivered is able to pick up the toxins resulting from metabolism, including the carbon dioxide we exhale with every breath and the toxins cleared through the liver and kidneys.

Blood itself carries a number of other properties, including its temperature. It also carries one of the defenses against tissue damage, the clotting platelets that prevent blood loss following injury.


A blood pressure test measures the pressure in the arteries as the heart pumps. A blood pressure test may be done as a part of a routine health checkup or as a screening for high blood pressure (hypertension). Some people use home monitors to check their blood pressure at home.

Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of Mercury (mm Hg) and recorded with the systolic number first, followed by the diastolic number. For example, a normal blood pressure would be recorded as something under 120/80 mm Hg.
Blood pressure is measured with an instrument called a sphygmomanometer. First, a cuff is placed around the arm at heart level. It is inflated with a pump until the circulation is cut off. A small valve slowly deflates the cuff, and the doctor measuring blood pressure uses a stethoscope, placed over thr arm, to listen for the sound of blood pulsing through the arteries. The first sound of rushing blood refers to the systolic blood pressure; once the sound fades, the second number indicates the diastolic pressure, the blood pressure of the heart while at rest.

Types of Blood Pressure

There are two types of blood pressure: Systolic blood pressure refers to the pressure inside your arteries when your heart is pumping; diastolic pressure is the pressure inside your arteries when your heart is resting between beats.

When the arteries are healthy and dilated, blood flows seamlessly and the heart doesn’t have to work too hard. The average adult’s blood prtessure is sometimes noted as 120/80 mm Hg. However, this is only an average and the healthcare provider could consider acceptable ranges for individual clients. For example, in adults, normal blood pressure can range from 95–145/60–90 mm Hg. The healthcare provider considers the client’s baseline blood pressure and the client’s current health state in conjunction with subjective data and other objective data. For example, a blood pressure of 90/50 mm Hg may be normal for a healthy, asymptomatic 20-year-old adult.

Factors That Influence Blood Pressure

AGE – The general pattern is that blood pressure rises with age, so normal variations tend to be higher for older adults.LIFESTYLE – lifestyles like poor sleep, too much fries. being sedentary, exposure to cold, unwholesome meals, anxiety, could affect one’s blood pressure.

GENDER – Blood pressure is similar in childhood for males and females. After puberty, females have lower blood pressure than males, whereas after menopause females have higher blood pressure than males.

DIURNAL RHYTHM – The diurnal cycle influences blood pressure to be lower in the morning and increase throughout the day until early evening. Try it out: take your blood pressure when you wake up in the morning and then again in late afternoon, and note the difference. This is one reason why healthcare providers document the time a client’s blood pressure is taken.

OBESITY – Blood pressure can be higher in people who are obese because the heart has to work harder to perfuse the body’s tissues.

EXERCISE – The nervous system is stimulated by exercise, stress, anxiety, pain, anger, and fear, which increases blood pressure. Blood pressure returns to baseline within five minutes of rest following activity. 


PREGNANCY -Blood pressure varies throughout the duration of pregnancy. It decreases about halfway through the first trimester until mid-pregnancy due to progesterone effects that relax the walls of blood vessels, causing decreased peripheral vascular resistance. It returns to pre-pregnancy values toward the end of pregnancy

WHITE COAT SYNDROME – This refers to elevated blood pressure due to nervousness or anxiety when clients have their blood pressure taken by a healthcare provider. This occurs in approximately 20% of clients. 


High blood pressure, also termed hypertension, is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.

Usually hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120


High blood pressure could sometimes come symptomless. However, If it becomes extremely high, there may be certain symptoms to look out for, including:

  • Severe headaches.
